About Me - My Singing Journey
I still remember the day when I approached my Dad about singing lessons. I was maybe, 5 (?) years old and had probably just finished watching my favorite movie of all time: 'The Wizard of Oz', admiring Judy Garland's abilities. I still remember the feeling, it just washed over me. It felt like a calling. And so I went downstairs from our living room to tell my Dad that "I want singing lessons".
A girl in my town had an acting agent, and her parents recommended to my parents that I go check out Shirley Grant Agency, and maybe I'd find a voice teacher that way.
I remember auditioning for the agency, and then was recommended to my first voice teacher, pictured below. I studied with her throughout my entire childhood, learning tons of 30's, 40's, and 50's Broadway repertoire, as well as famous jazz tunes, (not normal for a kid in the early 00's), and the fact that using my strong chest voice was a GOOD thing. Bernese taught me confidence, how to stand up straight, how to be loud, and how to be strong. Though I may not have learned perfect technique, Bernese was a teacher who helped catapult me into being the person I am today.
When she passed, she left me ALL of her sheet music. It was a shock to me, being that she had so many students.
